January 4, 2013 Breaking News Alert House, Senate OK $9.7B More for Flood Insurance Claims Read the full story The House of Representatives voted today 354-67 to increase the borrowing authority of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by $9.7 billion. The Senate, which already approved a similar increase but as part of a larger $60 billion Superstorm Sandy disaster relief measure, quickly approve the $9.7 billion for the NFIP by unanimous consent. January 3, 2013 Breaking News Alert Flood Insurance Funds Will Run Out Jan. 7 Without Congress OK: FEMA Read the full story The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which administers the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), has notified Congress that without the approval of additional borrowing authority, funds available to pay claims will be exhausted sometime around the week of January 7. Payments on more than 115,000 claims in states across the country may be delayed until Congress increases the NFIP borrowing authority, according to FEMA. January 2, 2013 Breaking News Alert House to Vote on Flood Insurance Funds on Friday; Sandy Aid Later Read the full story Under fire from fellow Republicans from Sandy-stricken New York and New Jersey, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, today agreed to hold two separate votes on storm relief including one vote on Friday to make about $9 billion available to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is running out of funds to pay Sandy flood claims. Boehner promised that a second vote on supplemental disaster aid for states hit by Superstorm Sandy will be held on Jan. 15, the first day of the new 113th Congress.
